How Lighting Affects Learning: Bright Solutions for Better Classrooms

Have you ever walked into a dimly lit room and immediately felt sluggish? Or stepped outside on a sunny day and felt your mood lift instantly?

That’s the power of light! It affects everything from our energy levels to our ability to focus—and in classrooms, it can make or break a student’s ability to learn.

Teachers and school designers are finally catching on to the fact that good lighting isn’t just about making things visible, it’s about creating the right environment for learning. So, why does lighting matter and how we can use it to help students shine? (literally and figuratively)

Why Light Matters for Learning

Our bodies rely on light to stay in sync with the 24-hour day. Natural light regulates our sleep, energy, and even mood. Ever wonder why you want to curl up on the couch and watch a movie on dark, rainy days? It’s because light plays a huge role in keeping our brains alert and ready to go. In schools, lighting can either help students focus and stay engaged—or make them tired and distracted. The type of lighting in a classroom can affect:

  • Concentration – Bright, cool light can help students stay alert during class.
  • Mood – Warmer, softer lighting can create a calm atmosphere that reduces stress.
  • Reading & Learning – The right lighting can even help improve reading fluency and comprehension!

    Cool vs. Warm Light

Different kinds of lighting have different effects on our brains. Studies show that cool white light (bluish tones) is great for boosting focus and performance on tasks like reading and problem-solving. On the flip side, warm white light (yellowish tones) can be more relaxing and better for group work or discussions.

One study found that male students performed better in cooler light, while female students did better in warmer light. Another study showed that flickering fluorescent lights (you know, the kind in old-school classrooms) actually cause discomfort and reduce focus. That’s why many schools are switching to LED lighting. Along with being energy efficient, LEDs mimic natural daylight and reduce strain. Mott et al. (2012)

Artificial vs. Natural Light: Does It Matter?

Absolutely!

Natural daylight is a game-changer when it comes to student performance. Research found that students in classrooms with big windows and skylights scored higher in reading and math compared to those in dimly lit rooms. Unfortunately, not all classrooms can be flooded with natural light, which is why smart artificial lighting systems are stepping in. Some schools are turning to color-selectable LEDs, which offer flexibility with just one bulb. Instead of needing multiple types of fixtures, these LEDs allow teachers to easily adjust color temperature with a simple control system.

A cool 6500K setting can enhance focus during tests, while a warmer 3000K setting can create a calming atmosphere for group work or reading. Color selectable LEDs allow you to switch between those settings in seconds. Some systems even integrate smart automation to shift lighting throughout the day, mimicking natural daylight patterns to help maintain students’ energy levels and attention. With just one adaptable bulb, classrooms can be transformed into dynamic learning environments tailored to different activities.

The Power of “Focus Lighting”

A recent study tested a special classroom lighting system with four settings: focus, energy, calm, and normal. The “focus” setting, with its bright 1000-lux, 6500K light (think crisp daylight vibes), was used during reading lessons. The results? Students in “focus-lit” classrooms improved their reading fluency more than those in traditional lighting. Mott et al. (2012)

On the other hand, the same study didn’t find a big impact on motivation or concentration. But let’s be honest, lighting can only do so much. A good teacher, an engaging lesson, and a well-structured learning environment also play huge roles.

Let’s Light Up Learning!

Good lighting is about more than just brightening up a space—it’s about creating an environment where students can thrive. Whether it’s maximizing natural daylight, switching to LED lights, or using smart lighting systems that adjust throughout the day, small changes in classroom lighting can have a huge impact on learning. So, next time you’re in a classroom, take a look around. Is it too dim? Too harsh? A little lighting makeover might be just what’s needed to help students shine their brightest!
