Different Types of Lighting Mounts and Their Applications
There are several ways that lighting fixtures can be mounted. The way that the lights are mounted will also impact what types of ceilings they can be installed in. By learning what types of fixtures suit which ceilings types, you’ll have no problem deciding the best fixtures for your application.
Recessed
Recessed fixtures are fixtures that sit flush against the ceiling or wall. They are put into precut holes so that they don’t stick out. They are best suited for T-bar grid ceilings, drywall ceilings, gypsum board and specialty ceiling tiles.
Surface Mount
Surface Mount fixtures are fixtures that stick out entirely from the wall/ceiling. They are attached directly to the surface; there are no cut-outs. They are best suited for concrete slabs, exposed structure, drywall and masonry walls.
Pendant
Pendant fixtures are single fixtures that are hung from the ceiling either by a cord, chain or metal rod. They are best suited for open ceilings, high bay areas, task lighting and decorative applications.
Suspended
Suspended fixtures can be several different fixtures but they all hang from a ceiling by cords, cables, rods or chains. Examples include pendant lighting, chandeliers, linear suspended lights & suspended grid/panel lights. They are best suited for high ceilings, industrial spaces, linear installations and architectural features.
Track Mount
Track Mount fixtures are fixtures that sit anywhere along a rail/track that has been electrified. This setup allows the fixture to tilt, slide and rotate making them highly versatile. They are best suited for retail spaces, galleries, adjustable lighting needs and accent lighting.
Wall Mount
Wall Mount fixtures are any fixtures that are attached to a vertical surface (a wall). They are best suited for corridors, exterior walls, decorative lighting and emergency egress.
